Fee policy
Fees cannot be negotiated. GMC guidance is clear that negotiation could be seen as an inducement to surgery.
Patients in genuine financial hardship who do not want monthly financing can ask about consultation on a non-profit basis: £40 consultation and £300 per eye surgery, covering indemnity and fixed costs only. Please ask the secretary.
There is no correlation between clinical care and financial costs. Every patient receives the same standard of care regardless of what they pay.
Possible additional costs
Mr Desai's own services are free for one year from surgery; other providers' costs are the patient's responsibility. Costs that can arise:
- Laser enhancement or piggy-back IOL if a residual refractive error remains — around 5–7% of patients in his experience. Mr Desai does not perform laser correction himself, so this would be with another provider.
- Multifocal-to-monofocal IOL exchange for multifocal intolerance (fewer than 1 in 100 patients). No surgeon fee is charged, but hospital and IOL costs are approximately £900 per eye.
- YAG capsulotomy if posterior capsular opacity develops after the first year.
- Post-operative investigations such as OCT scans — around 1–2% of patients incur extra costs.
